Lucy Kerr Miss Scotland Trip to New York
Monday, February 13th, 2017
With an early 5am start at the airport, myself and former Miss Scotland and STV presenter Jennifer Reoch couldn’t control our excitement as we jetted off to New York.
We were heading over stateside for the most fabulous event of the year, celebrating Scottish designers in America appearing in the fashion show called Dressed to Kilt. With many A-listers who have walked the catwalk before us we had to make sure we matched up to their star qualities. Finally, after what felt like hours in the air Jennifer and I arrived at JFK and were taken to The High Line Hotel.
Walking the streets of NYC for the first time was so surreal, I loved every minute. Once we had unpacked and hung up our glitzy dresses I couldn’t wait to start exploring the city. Taking an endless number of selfies and enjoying the incredible views I had a great first night.
The next morning, we headed up to the meeting room to meet the designers and get fitted for the fashion show. I was in awe seeing all of the designs and couldn’t wait to try them on. Designers and models were milling around with the whole operation being expertly guided by the top stylist Janis-Sue Smith. I was given the most incredible Siobhan Mackenzie dress to wear alongside a quirky design by Jeffrey Gardner which was corpse bride inspired.
Once the fitting was finished Jennifer and I headed out to hit the best shops and sights the city had to offer. I had the most amazing day, New York is so magical. My favourite part had to be walking through times square and Broadway at night seeing the city lit up. Everything in New York was just exactly as I imagined from the movies with yellow cabs everywhere, flashing lights and the most incredible skyscrapers. After a long day, we needed to make sure we got a good sleep before the exciting night we had the following day.
This was my first time on a New York catwalk and I couldn’t wait for the extravaganza to begin. As we arrived there was a bagpiper to greet all guests as this was a celebration of all things Scottish and we headed straight to the red carpet for a few snaps. Surrounded by kilts, there was hundreds of people arriving in the grand hall at the High Line Hotel excited to watch the show. Backstage was crazy with models, hairspray and make up everywhere there was even filming for the real housewives of New York.
In my favourite Siobhan Mackenzie tartan gown, I felt so elegant. Walking in Dressed to Kilt as Miss Scotland was the most incredible feeling in the world and knowing that I was representing my country at such a prestigious event will stay with my forever. With my adrenaline pumping and being surrounded by photographers on the catwalk I was having the time of my life. The madness and excitement of the main event was over however the after party was just starting. I spoke to some very inspirational designers and was blessed with meeting some great people throughout my trip to New York. Unfortunately, as the night came to an end it was time to fly home the following day. I truly had the most amazing time in New York and I can’t wait to return to the big apple. NYC exceeded all of my expectations and walking in Dressed to Kilt was an experience of a lifetime.
